Davido Targeted in Osun Shooting, Police Confirm One Dead

According to the Osun State Police Command, the attack on Governor Ademola Adeleke’s convoy in Osogbo targeted Nigerian musician David Adeleke, widely known as Davido.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when security personnel assigned to Governor Adeleke engaged unidentified armed individuals in a gunfight during the governor’s visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo.

Prior to the palace visit, Davido had accompanied Governor Adeleke and his family to the election commission’s office, where the governor officially received his Certificate of Return.

According to preliminary investigations, members of the Eye Confraternity allegedly targeted Afrobeats star Davido during his visit, Osun State Police Public Relations Officer Abiodun Ojelabi said.

Ojelabi said Davido’s security team stopped Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” an ex-convict and suspected cult member, from approaching the singer.

He said, “the ensuing confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members in the vicinity, who temporarily blocked the entrance to the palace and obstructed the movement of the convoy of the governor.”

The police also confirmed that Tajudeen Yusuf, 60, sustained a gunshot injury during the incident and later died in hospital.

The incident has renewed concerns about political violence in Osun State, particularly following reports of violence during the election period.

The Accord Party alleged that more than 28 civilians died in attacks by suspected political thugs during the period. The APC, however, accused the Accord Party of inciting violence that resulted in the deaths of some of its members.

Davido debunked the claims in a post shared on his verified X account on Wednesday night, denying that an attack took place. He clarified that there was a fight outside the palace of the monarch they visited.

“Lies! It was a fight outside the palace that had nothing to do with us. The people love his excellency,” he wrote.
