EFCC Returns to Twitter: “Some Birds Can’t Be Kept Down”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its return to X (formerly known as Twitter) with a strong statement, proclaiming that “there are some birds you cannot keep down.” This declaration marks the agency’s renewed presence on the social media platform after a brief period of inactivity that had sparked speculation among the public.

The EFCC’s X account, which boasts over 2 million followers, was reported as inactive on August 16, 2024, causing concern and confusion among its users. Searches for the account during that time returned the message, “The term you entered did not bring up any results. Please try again later,” leading to widespread rumors of a hacking attempt by cybercriminals, often referred to as “Yahoo boys.”

However, the EFCC quickly dispelled these rumors. Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s spokesperson, clarified that the account’s temporary disappearance was due to an ongoing upgrade and not a security breach. He reassured the public, stating, “Our X account is down temporarily due to an ongoing upgrade, and we will soon bounce back. The upgrade is aimed at enhancing our service to the public.”

During the period when the X account was inaccessible, the EFCC maintained active communication through its other social media channels, including Facebook and Instagram, as well as its official website. Oyewale emphasized that the temporary downtime was part of the agency’s efforts to update its records and improve its digital presence.

The EFCC’s return to X signals its commitment to maintaining a robust online presence as part of its broader anti-corruption efforts. The agency’s strong statement and quick action to clarify the situation reflect its determination to continue its fight against financial crimes in Nigeria.
