Nigerian engineer Kemisola Bolarinwa has developed a smart bra aimed at detecting early-stage breast cancer. Inspired by the loss of a loved one to the disease in 2017, Bolarinwa founded Nextwear Technologies, Nigeria’s first wearable technology startup, and dedicated herself to creating the innovative bra. Utilizing ultrasound technology condensed into a portable device, the bra aims to detect breast lumps.

Bolarinwa’s invention gained recognition from BBC Africa after a year and a half of intensive research, with a prototype emerging in 2019.

The smart bra, employing nanotechnology and a specialized ultrasound system called the Doppler, requires further development and extensive clinical testing before reaching the commercial market. Bolarinwa aims for mass production to begin by late 2022 or early 2023.

Beyond her role as an inventor, Bolarinwa advocates for more women in STEM fields, emphasizing the importance of research and development to effectively address societal challenges. Holding a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering, Bolarinwa is also an entrepreneur and president of the Women In ICT Foundation, supporting women and girls in technology education and entrepreneurship. #naijaeyesblog
