N2.5bn for Love? Kano Plans Grand Mass Wedding
The Kano State government has allocated N2.5 billion for mass weddings within the state.
Musa Sulaiman Shanono, the State’s Commissioner for Planning and Budget, shared this information while presenting the details of the approved budget of N719.7 billion for the 2025 fiscal year to the media.
According to Shanono, the funds will facilitate the quarterly mass weddings across all 44 local government areas in the state.
It is worth noting that the mass wedding initiative was first established by the administration of two-term former governor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.
During 2023, the current government led by the New Nigeria People’s Party, under Governor Abba Yusuf, organized a mass wedding event for over 1,800 couples at a total cost of N854 million.
The commissioner also mentioned that a significant sum of N6.2 billion has been designated for a free education initiative (N4 billion) and a free school feeding program (N2.2 billion) within the state.
He stated that the education sector received the largest portion of the budget, amounting to N205.9 billion, which accounts for 29% of the overall budget.
He remarked, “The proposed budget, referred to as the ‘Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development,’ aims to strengthen the state government’s ongoing policies in allocating resources and efforts toward fostering human capital and economic growth.

The proposed budget, which was presented to the State House of Assembly, has a total size of N549.1 billion. The Assembly has engaged in the necessary processes of review, consultation, and public hearings in accordance with the legal requirements. The budget was approved on Thursday, December 20, 2024, and signed into law by the Executive Governor on December 31, 2024.
“The 2025 approved budget totals N719.7 billion, which is an increase of N170,595,000,000, a rise of 31% compared to the original figure submitted by His Excellency to the State House of Assembly. The total recurrent expenditure amounts to N262.6 billion, while the total capital expenditure is N457 billion.

“The proportion of recurrent to capital expenditure stands at 36:64. This budget surpasses the 2024 budget by N282.4 billion, signifying a 65% increase. The approved financial plan exceeds the state’s anticipated available resources outlined in the 2025-2027 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) as a result of enhanced revenue streams from FAAC following the subsidy removal and additional capital receipts.
“The total anticipated recurrent revenue for the 2025 budget is projected at N617 billion, comprising N85.8 billion from internally generated revenue (IGR) and N531 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), compared to the total recurrent revenue of N379.7 billion in 2024. Consequently, the recurrent revenue for 2025 exceeds that of 2024 by N237 billion, representing an increase of 62.5%.
“It is also noteworthy that the projected Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for 2025 is N16 billion less than the previous year’s, indicating a 15.8% decline. As for capital receipts, the estimated figure for 2025 is N73.7 billion, while the Treasury Opening Balance stands at N29 billion.

“Below is a detailed allocation for various significant projects and programs for each sector in 2025. The education sector’s approved budget for 2025 totals N205.9 billion.
