The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved a $500 million loan for Nigeria to enhance its electricity infrastructure and promote cleaner energy sources. The funding will support the Economic Governance and Energy Transition Support Program (EGET-SP), which aims to improve access to renewable energy and implement Nigeria’s new Electricity Act and Energy Transition Plan. The initiative includes developing 250 GW of installed electricity capacity by 2050, primarily from renewable sources, and providing clean cooking solutions. The loan will also help address the metering gap and eliminate estimated billing by the end of 2024. Igboho Can’t Evict Anyone from South-West.

Igboho Can’t Evict Anyone from South-West, Say Afenifere and Hunters.

Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has issued a fresh eviction notice to armed Fulani herders in the South-West due to ongoing banditry and kidnappings. This marks the second time Igboho has called for the removal of these groups from the region, particularly targeting those accused of violent crimes like kidnapping, rape, and murder.

In 2021, Igboho’s initial eviction notice led to a tense confrontation with the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, resulting in a raid on Igboho’s residence and the tragic death of some of his aides. Igboho himself narrowly escaped, later being detained in the Niger Republic before his release, thanks to the intervention of prominent Yoruba leaders.

The recent resurgence in herder-related violence prompted Igboho to issue a new warning, emphasizing that all Fulani people involved in criminal activities must leave the Oke Ogun area immediately. The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has expressed support for Igboho’s actions. Their National Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, commended Igboho for his bold stance, noting that his efforts have the backing of local kings and chiefs. Afenifere asserts that the forests should be reserved for wildlife and that anyone engaging in criminal activities under the guise of herding should be treated as a threat to public safety. The group stands firmly behind Igboho’s mission to protect farmers and the local community from harm.

Filmmaker Ugezu Ugezu calls out fake news.

Filmmaker Ugezu Ugezu has addressed the perception that Nigerians in the South East did not participate in the national protest against hardship on August 1. Following criticism on social media, where some users questioned why the region appeared quiet compared to other parts of the country, Ugezu responded by asserting that South Easterners did indeed partake in the protests, albeit in a unique way.

In a post on Instagram, Ugezu emphasized that it is erroneous to suggest that the South East was inactive during the demonstrations. He clarified that the people from this region chose to express their discontent differently. To support his point, Ugezu shared a video showing a group of Igbo men engaging in their form of protest. The video featured them drinking beer, singing, dancing, and “hailing” the President in a seemingly jovial manner.

Ugezu’s post suggests that the South Easterners decided to protest in a culturally resonant way, blending traditional forms of expression with a light-hearted yet poignant critique of the current state of affairs. By highlighting this, Ugezu aimed to show that the South East did participate in the nationwide protest, challenging the narrative that they were indifferent to the issues at hand.

Traffic lights vandalized in Kano as EndBadGovernance protest turns destructive.

The clip captures the moment when two individuals, amid the protests against hunger and poor governance, aggressively vandalize traffic lights in the city.

Pastor says wives should permit side chicks if husbands manage the household well.

Nigerian pastor Prophet Joseph Apata Enoch has sparked controversy with his recent comments suggesting that wives should support their husbands’ choices to have side chicks, provided the husbands fulfill their duties at home and have built homes for their additional partners.

In a Facebook post on July 30, 2024, Enoch argued that good governance begins at the household level. He stated that if a husband is adequately supporting his wife, including providing for her and building a house, then she should accept his decision to have side chicks. Enoch further claimed that no man, not even biblical figures like Abraham, can manage without side chicks, labeling this as a truth of life.

He also touched on issues of bad governance in relationships, urging men who are unwilling to marry their partners to let them go so they can find someone who will marry them. Enoch shared his personal experience, explaining that he had faced legal trouble over his own marriage decisions, but defended his actions by saying that true love involves marriage and commitment, and dismissing the notion that someone who loves another but doesn’t marry them is engaging in “bad governance.”

His remarks have ignited a debate on social media and among religious communities, with many questioning the morality and practicality of his advice.

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities has proposed that students might face an N80,000 fee to cover the rising electricity costs for universities. The Secretary-General, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, explained that universities are struggling with monthly electricity bills that have surged from N1 billion to N4 billion annually due to recent tariff hikes. With costs for electricity exceeding N200 million monthly, universities may either charge students or reduce operations. Vice-chancellors have appealed to the Federal Government for relief or a return to previous rates, but have yet to receive a response.
