Alex Otti has approved legislation halting the pension of Orji Uzor Kalu and former governors in Abia.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia has signed the Abia State of Nigeria Governors and Deputy Governors Pension Repeal Bill of 2024 into law. He signed it on Thursday, March 21, 2023, after the state House of Assembly passed it on Tuesday.

Nine individuals have governed Abia state since its creation in 1991. They are Frank Ajobena; Ogbonnaya Onu; Chinyere Ike Nwosu; Temi Ejoor; Moses Fasanya; Anthony Obi; Orji Uzor Kalu; Theodore A. Orji; and Okezie Ikpeazu.

Otti expressed gratitude to the state House of Assembly for swiftly passing the Bill. He assured them of his administration’s full support.

Before signing the bill, Otti made it clear that his government wouldn’t continue paying pensions to former governors and deputy governors. He believed that money should go toward clearing the pension backlog for retired Abia workers since 2014.

Otti stressed that leadership isn’t about self-interest but stewardship to the people. He believed halting pensions for former officials was the right move for good governance.

He appreciated the House of Assembly for their cooperation, which he said was based on trust and respect for the common good.

Earlier, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emereuwa, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Austin Meregini, presented the bill for Otti’s assent. The bill repeals Law No 4 of 2001, which allowed the state government to pay pensions to governors and deputy governors.
