Breaking News: The Appeal Court has reinstated Julius Abure as Labour Party chairman and imposed a fine on Apapa.
In a significant development, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
The Appellate Court overturned the ruling of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, which previously restrained Abure and two others from acting as national officers of the party.
Justice Hamma Barka delivered the judgment, emphasizing that the high court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.
In the appeal brought forth by Abure challenging the high court’s decision, Justice Barka, leading a three-member panel of Justices, ruled in favor of Abure, stating, “The judgment of the lower court is hereby set aside.” Furthermore, the Court awarded a cost of N1 million against the respondents in favor of Abure.
The Appellate Court also ordered Lamidi Apapa to pay a fine of One million Naira in favor of Abure.

Last year, Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court granted an ex-parte order, instructing Abure and two other national officers to cease representing themselves as party leaders due to alleged forgery of national documents. However, the Appellate Court overturned this decision.
The Appellate Court found merit in Abure’s appeal and allowed it.
Following the 2023 presidential election, where LP’s Peter Obi secured the third position, Abure has been embroiled in a prolonged legal dispute with Apapa, who claimed the party’s chairmanship.
On March 21, 2024, Abure was arrested in Benin City, Edo State, amidst a scuffle captured in viral videos, as LP supporters resisted his arrest. The police stated that Abure was arrested for attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, and related offenses. After protests by LP members, the LP chairman was released on bail the following day.
