Nigerian rapper and singer Shallipopi has opened up about why he transitioned from rap music to singing.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the ‘Cast’ crooner explained that although he started out as a rapper, he switched to Amapiano because it is more profitable.
According to Shallipopi, rap music remains his first love, but the genre has not been financially rewarding for him, partly because of the limited support and preferences of Nigerian music listeners.
“I’ve been rapping for a long time. I’m originally a trap artist, but Amapiano is what puts food on the table, so I had to embrace it,” he said.
The singer also addressed his decision to reject the Headies award for Best Rap Song, which his hit track ‘Cast’ won last year. He explained that he turned down the award because he felt the organisers were trying to label him strictly as a rapper.
Shallipopi added that he believes he deserved recognition in both the singing and rap categories.
