World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has announced her withdrawal from the China Open, citing personal reasons. The five-time Grand Slam champion shared the news on Friday, marking a disappointing decision for the 23-year-old Polish star who won last year’s tournament in Beijing by defeating Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets.

Swiatek has had a packed season, which included winning the French Open in June and securing a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, the demanding schedule has taken its toll. She previously pulled out of the Canadian Open and the Korea Open, citing fatigue, and recently lost to American Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open.

“Due to personal matters, I’m forced to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing,” Swiatek said in her statement. “I’m very sorry as I had an amazing time playing and winning this tournament last year and was really looking forward to being back there.”

Swiatek expressed her disappointment but wished the tournament well, adding, “I know that the fans will experience great tennis there, and I’m sorry I won’t be a part of it this time.”

The China Open, a prestigious WTA 1000 event, is scheduled to run from September 25 to October 6, and while Swiatek’s absence will be felt, fans can still look forward to a competitive lineup in Beijing.
