A Nigerian group called Citizens’ Gavel has launched an innovative AI platform called Podus AI to assist underprivileged Nigerians in accessing legal aid and conducting legal research.
Podus AI: User-Friendly Legal Guidance
This user-friendly app essentially functions as a comprehensive legal resource containing nearly all of Nigeria’s laws (98%). It prioritizes guiding users through emergency situations such as police brutality, illegal detention, and fundamental rights violations.

Citizens’ Gavel has designed Podus AI to be accessible through various channels:

Focus on Empowering the Vulnerable
Oluwafemi Ajibade, a lawyer and Podus AI’s Operations Lead, emphasized the platform’s goal of empowering society’s most vulnerable. He explained it aims to provide solutions to basic legal problems faced by victims of abuse, human rights violations, or those intimidated by authority figures.

The program has received positive feedback, and the team is actively incorporating user suggestions to improve the platform’s usefulness.
AI as a Legal Ally, Not a Replacement
Citizens’ Gavel stresses that Podus AI is not intended to replace lawyers. Instead, it aims to complement and ease their workload in a nation facing a shortage of legal professionals. Following Podus AI’s guidance, users might still require a lawyer’s help for court representation and documentation.
Expanding Accessibility: Pidgin English Support
The team plans to further enhance accessibility by incorporating Pidgin English, a widely spoken language in Nigeria, into Podus AI’s capabilities.
