A glitch knocked out WhatsApp for many users worldwide on Wednesday afternoon. This impacted over 2 billion people who rely on the messaging service.

Starting shortly after 2 PM ET, users in various countries reported issues connecting to WhatsApp. Many experienced a frustrating “connecting” screen without success.

Messages weren’t lost, but they wouldn’t be delivered until WhatsApp recovered.

An update on Meta’s business API status page confirmed the outage. It affected services connecting to WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, starting around 2:10 PM ET.

By 4 PM ET, most U.S. users seemed to be back online. Shortly after (4:45 PM ET), the status page confirmed the fix. The Verge reached out to Meta for comment, but there hasn’t been a response yet.

This outage comes on the heels of a broader Meta issue that locked users out of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads just weeks ago. That outage lasted about two hours but didn’t affect WhatsApp. Major WhatsApp outages are uncommon, with the last significant one taking the service down for two hours in 2022.
