When Windows enters the Meta Quest
Rejoice if Windows in mixed reality sounds like your kind of fun. Microsoft said Tuesday at Microsoft Ignite 2024 that, as part of a public preview, the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S will get the “full capabilities” of Windows 11 in December.
In this case, “full capabilities” refers to the ability to use a Quest headset to access a local Windows PC or a cloud instance of Windows (via Windows 365). Microsoft compares the experience to a “private, high-quality, large, multi-monitor workstation” and claims that it only takes “seconds” to connect. That will be up to us to decide.
With the help of what Microsoft is referring to as Volumetric Apps, supported apps in this new Windows modality can now operate in three dimensions. Microsoft demonstrated a digitally exploded view of an Xbox controller during a May demo from the viewpoint of a Quest 3 wearer, who could control the device with their hands.
To gain access to an API that enables them to create plug-ins for 3D Windows desktop applications, developers can register.
As early as 2022, Microsoft hinted at Quest’s Windows content when it announced that it will collaborate with Meta to provide a few Windows apps, including as Microsoft Teams, to Meta headsets. In addition to bringing its video game streaming service, Xbox Cloud Gaming, to the hardware, Microsoft introduced Microsoft 365 productivity features, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, on the Quest last December.
