Tinubu defamation case: Court grants Omoyele Sowore N200m bail

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), in the sum of N200 million.

Delivering the ruling on Tuesday, Justice Muhammad Umar directed Sowore to provide two sureties as part of the bail conditions. The court stated that one surety must be a traditional ruler from his community, while the second must possess landed property in Abuja.

The judge also ordered that both sureties be verified by the prosecution.

As part of the bail terms, Sowore was further instructed to surrender his international passport to the deputy chief registrar of the court pending the conclusion of the trial.

Sowore is facing prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that he made defamatory claims against President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in posts shared on his X and Facebook accounts.

At the end of proceedings on June 24, the court adjourned the matter to June 30 for its continuation, where pending applications and further arguments are expected to be addressed.

The court had earlier revoked the bail granted to Sowore on self-recognition in December 2025 and ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre after he failed to appear at the previous hearing.
