17 Police Officers Killed in Terrorist Attack on Yobe Military Base

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that terrorists killed 17 police officers during an attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

According to sources, suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched a coordinated assault on military positions in Yobe State on May 8, but troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), repelled the attack.

Reports said the officers were undergoing special operational training when the attackers stormed the facility in the early hours of May 8 in what authorities described as a coordinated assault.

The militants reportedly attacked from multiple directions around 2 a.m. under the cover of darkness, but the military responded with what officials described as “devastating firepower.”

According to a statement issued on Saturday by Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Placid, the officers were undergoing specialist operational training at the facility when terrorists launched a coordinated attack from multiple directions.

In addition, Placid said that several Nigerian Army soldiers were also killed while repelling the assault.

IGP Reacts

Meanwhile, the Force spokesperson noted that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu described the deceased officers as “courageous and dedicated personnel,” adding that they demonstrated their commitment to national security through participation in advanced counterterrorism and tactical training programmes.

According to him, the IGP extended condolences to the families of the deceased officers, assuring them that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
