Niger State to pay N80,000 minimum wage
The Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Bago, has announced that a new minimum wage of N80,000 will be paid in Niger State from November 2024.
Governor Bago shared this after a meeting between the state and its labour union. He assured them that his administration will regularly review the minimum wage.
In response to how sustainable the payment of N80,000 minimum wage is, the governor referred to the state’s agricultural prosperity. In his words,
“This is very sustainable. ₦80,000 is sustainable. With our advances in agriculture, I am confident we can afford it. We are creating a civil service farm so that civil servants can be productive. With that, I am certain we could eventually pay as much as ₦1 million as minimum wage.”
The governor explained that both the state and local government civil servants would benefit from the new minimum wage, “We have already paid this month’s salary, so it will take effect in November.”
Idris Lafene, The Niger State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, communicated his pleasure at the news. According to him, the governor had done more than they asked for, “I feel delighted, and at least Niger State is now among the top-ranking states to implement a higher minimum wage,” Lafene added.
Lafene didn’t fail to add that although the minimum wage can not cater to their current cost of living, it’s a step in the right direction, “It is not enough to buy a bag of rice, but at least it is a step forward,” he said.
