The African Democratic Congress (ADC) faction led by Alhaji Abdulkkadir Mohammed Bashir has formally adopted its presidential candidate in 2023, Dumebi Kachikwu as its candidate  for the 2027 election.

On Sunday, the faction also dissolved the David Mark-led national working committee (NWC) and formally adopted Dumebi Kachikwu as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Delegates endorsed Kachikwu through a voice vote at the faction’s national convention and presidential primary held in Abuja.

The group immediately constituted a new set of national officers to replace the dissolved NWC.

After delegates elected him as the party’s national chairman, Bashir presented Kachikwu with the party’s flag to symbolise his mandate for the forthcoming election.

Speaking after accepting the endorsement and party flag, Dumebi Kachikwu described Nigeria as being at a critical crossroads, plagued by insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship, and deepening divisions.

He said, “Nigeria belongs to all of us and must not be controlled by a few privileged interests.”

Additionally, he that the middle class’s mass departure from the nation indicates a general dissatisfaction with the state of affairs.

Kachikwu further described the ADC as a reliable substitute that could give people hope again.

Also speaking on his part, the newly elected national chairman, Abdulkadir Bashir, asked members to respect the party’s constitution and refrain from taking any measures that would exacerbate divides.

Following this move, the ADC now has three factions of the African Democratic Congress.

The faction led by former Senate president, David Mark; the faction led by former Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe and now the one led by Bashir.

BACKSTORY…

Meanwhile, former Vice President and ADC chieftain, Atiku Abubakar, has firmly urged delegates of the ADC to prioritise competence and national reach over sentiments and social media popularity.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, the former Vice President dismissed social media enthusiasm as an insufficient test for the presidency.

Atiku further stressed that the party must field its strongest candidate to defeat President Bola Tinubu.
