The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned passengers against putting pressure on drivers to speed while travelling.
On Tuesday in Calabar, Cross River State, FRSC operatives intercepted a drunk driver during a sensitisation campaign conducted ahead of the Sallah celebrations.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Cross River State, Innocent Tommy Etuk, said the campaign was designed to educate both motorists and passengers on safe driving practices during the festive period.
He cautioned that passengers who encourage overspeeding contribute to dangerous road behaviour that can lead to fatal accidents.
Etuk stressed that passengers are not always right when they demand reckless driving, adding that drivers must remain calm and prioritise safety at all times.
He further advised travellers to value safe arrival over speed, noting that families prefer joyful reunions rather than mourning preventable losses.
During the operation, the drunk driver was tested with a breathalyser and found to have an alcohol level of 0.481 milligrams, far above the approved limit for driving.
According to Etuk, the driver was immediately stopped from continuing the trip to prevent a potential crash.
He described the situation as a “disaster waiting to happen” and reiterated that such drivers cannot be allowed on the road for safety reasons.
