Century’s largest diamond discovered in Botswana.
A massive 2,492-carat diamond, the largest discovered in over a century, has been unearthed at the Karowe Mine in Botswana. This extraordinary find, the second-largest diamond ever recorded, was presented at a ceremony hosted by Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi. The diamond, weighing nearly half a kilogram, was discovered by Lucara Diamond Corp., a Canadian mining company, using advanced X-ray technology designed to detect large stones.
Although its value and sale strategy are yet to be determined, this historic discovery has already drawn global attention. In 2016, a smaller diamond from the same mine sold for $63 million, setting a record for rough gems. Lucara’s Botswana managing director, Naseem Lahri, hailed the find as a significant milestone for both the company and the nation, emphasizing Botswana’s role in the diamond industry. This discovery continues the legacy of Botswana as a leading source of some of the world’s most remarkable diamonds.
