Amidst a nationwide decline in power supply, Distribution Companies (DisCos) have declined to accept 1,769.92 megawatts of electricity.

As Nigerians grapple with deteriorating electricity supply, recent data on the daily load summary of power distribution companies revealed that approximately 1,769.91 megawatts of electricity went undistributed between February 1 and 14, 2024. Information from the Transmission Company of Nigeria, obtained in Abuja on Monday, indicated that while some companies received excess electricity load allocations, most failed to utilize the entirety of the energy allocated to them, leading to inconsistent power supply nationwide. The worsening power situation prompted Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, to summon certain power firms and the TCN to account for the decline in electricity supply within their respective regions.

The Minister’s stance aligns with the figures.

The Minister’s stance is supported by the data on the daily load summary of power distribution companies from February 1 to 14, 2024. During this period, various Discos failed to utilize allocated electricity while others received excess load allocations. For instance, on February 1, seven Discos did not use 128.62MW, whereas four others took an excess load allocation of 61.91MW.

Throughout the second week of February, power distributors failed to distribute approximately 1,043.63MW of electricity but received an excess load allocation of 330.97MW. The ongoing power supply issues have exacerbated the challenges faced by Nigerians in recent months. Niyi Yusuf, chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, remarked on the country’s power supply challenge, stating that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s $1 trillion Gross Domestic Product growth target by 2030 was unattainable with a reliance on generators.
