Nigeria’s Grid Collapses: First Blackout of 2025 Hits Hard
The first collapse of the national grid since 2025 in Nigeria occurred just ten days into the New Year whilst plunging many parts of the country into a blackout.
A report from the Nigerian System Operator portal (niggrid.org) said that the event occurred at 1:56 pm.
Then the portal continued, “Restoration commenced. Currently generating 302 MW as of 02:40 pm”.
EnergyTimePod explains the collapse of the National Grid to the reader: “We know the misperception your experience has created.
“And two truths may well coexist here: A small explainer: There’s really just two forms of national grid collapse. Partial even collapse: This is where some areas of the nation still have light, even if the entire nation has experienced the collapse.
“Total failure: In this case, every part of the country gets into a blackout.
“On today’s development, the grid collapsed around 01:56 pm and we reported 36 minutes later.
“That your light went off 10 minutes after our report does not make it false. On our last check, generation was a little above 1,000 MW out of a possible 4,500/4,800 MW.”
This accounts for a 13th collision in the last 13 months. It fell 12 times throughout 2024.
