Breaking: Adewunmi Onanuga, House Deputy Whip, Passes Away
With deep regrets, she was pronounced dead. The House of Representatives Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga popularly known as Ijaya.
Onanuga died after a short illness on this day, January 15, 2025. She represented Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State.
A statement by the House Spokesperson Rep Akin Rotimi confirmed the news. Onanuga, born on December 2, 1965, is a hardworking public servant, an inspiring leader, and a strong advocate for her constituents, he added.
Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 from the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC. He was serving as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly and was championing policies to empower women and advance social welfare.
She was re-elected in 2023 and became Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, an unmatched leadership, coupled with solid commitment to disciplinary legislative duty within and outside parliamentary sittings.
Ijaya otherwise; Rep. Onanuga had not only commanded respect from her colleagues and constituents through intellect, passion, and humility, but also through an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Such gigantic contributions to the political spectrum of Nigeria were in every sense manifestations of her love and hard work for improvement in society and commitment to public service.
Aged 59 years, we commiserate with her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State, especially Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituencies, and to the entire membership of the National Assembly.
We mourn the loss of such a vibrant and committed lawmaker, whose life was truly dedicated to bettering the lives of Nigerians, especially those she represented. Yet, her legacy of service and commitment will never die but live with future generations.
The family will soon announce the burial.
