Security Personnel Foil Assassination Plot on Federal Lawmaker Henry Okojie
has been thwarted by security personnel. Okojie, who is also the husband of popular Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson, was reportedly targeted by armed thugs during the ongoing election in Edo State.
According to a statement released by Okojie’s media aide, Michael Ihaza, the attack occurred on Friday, September 20, 2024, when a group of armed men disguised as police officers arrived at Okojie’s residence in a Lexus GX 470 SUV with a Rivers State registration number (PHC 253 FF). The men claimed to be on an appointment with the lawmaker and gained access to his sitting room.
However, the swift intervention of the security personnel attached to Okojie prevented the plot from succeeding. Two of the suspects managed to flee the scene, while the driver of the vehicle and another individual were captured and are currently being interrogated by officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s Area Command in Uromi.
Although the full motive behind the attack remains unclear, it is suspected to be politically motivated, given the tense atmosphere surrounding the Edo governorship election. Okojie, a prominent political figure in Edo, has been actively involved in the election, which has seen rising tensions and reports of violence in some areas.
The attempted assassination has sparked widespread concern about the safety of political figures and the general electorate during the election process. Many are calling for tighter security measures to ensure the protection of candidates and voters alike.
