The former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has just been denied bail by the FCT high court due to procedural irregularities in his bail application.
FCT High Court Judge, Justice Maryanne Anenih, spoke about the irregularities, citing Yahaya’s absence at the time of filing the bail application.
She said, “Having not been filed when the first defendant was either in custody or before the court, this instant application is incompetent. Consequently, the application, having been filed prematurely, is hereby refused.”
Yahaya Bello is being investigated by the EFCC for financial crimes involving money laundering, amongst others, totaling up to N110 billion.
NaijaEyes gathered more reports on the dates of the bail applications. The ex-Kogi state governor filed for his bail almost a week before his arraignment. He filed for bail on November 22, and his arraignment was on November 27.
Meanwhile, in Ekiti State, human rights activist Dele Farotimi has been denied bail by the magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti. Abayomi Adeosun, the magistrate court judge, adjourned the hearing on the decision for Farotimi’s bail application to December 20.
Farotimi is currently in detention for an alleged case of defamation of Afe Babalola in his best-selling book, titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.”
