Genk’s Forward Tolu Arokodare Targeted Online After Missed Penalty
Tolu Arokodare, the Nigerian striker for KRC Genk in Belgium, has been targeted with racist abuse online following a missed penalty in their recent match against Club Brugge.
Missed Opportunity, Racist Outburst
The incident occurred at Cegeka Arena, where Genk, then in fifth place, aimed to climb the standings with a win over third-placed Brugge. Arokodare, who has found the net eight times in ten starts for Genk this season, had a chance to give his team the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute. However, his attempt went wide, shifting momentum in Brugge’s favor. Club Brugge capitalized, securing a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Hugo Vetlesen (18th minute) and two additional strikes in the later stages of the game.
Unacceptable Online Abuse
Unfortunately, Arokodare faced racist abuse on social media after the missed penalty, with some Genk fans expressing their displeasure in a deplorable manner. Nigerian sports journalist Ojora Babatunde, based in Paris, took to his social media platform (unspecified) on Sunday to condemn the abuse and highlight the unacceptable behavior of these Genk supporters.
Replacement Find Faces Unfair Treatment
Arokodare joined Genk in the 2023 winter transfer window, replacing fellow Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu who moved to Southampton. Since arriving at Genk, Arokodare has contributed 13 goals in 50 appearances. It’s disheartening to see him targeted with such negativity despite his overall positive impact on the club.
This incident underscores the ongoing battle against racism in football. Racist attacks have no place in the sport, and Arokodare’s experience is a reminder of the need for continued efforts to promote inclusivity and respect.
