UK and Saudi Arabia Forge Science and Tech Partnership
The UK and Saudi Arabia have signed a deal to strengthen collaboration in science, technology, and research and development (R&D). This agreement follows Science Minister Andrew Griffith’s visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Focus on Deep Tech for Shared Goals
Both nations aim to work together on “deep tech” research areas like food security and clean energy. This collaboration aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy beyond oil.
Strengthening Innovation on a Global Scale
“Collaboration is crucial for the UK’s science and innovation ambitions,” stated Griffith. He sees Saudi Arabia’s commitment to modernization as a key opportunity for the UK’s own technological advancements.
Building a Collaborative Future
The agreement outlines plans for regular meetings between researchers and businesses from both countries. These meetings will focus on finding ways to expand business opportunities and share R&D efforts to develop new technologies.
Expanding Partnerships in Tech
This pact follows a recent visit by UK Tech Secretary Michelle Donelan to the United Arab Emirates, which also explored collaboration in AI research and investment.
Vision 2030 and Human Rights Concerns
This agreement aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a plan for economic diversification. However, critics argue that Vision 2030 aims to distract from alleged human rights abuses in the country. The UK government has previously faced criticism over its trade deals with Saudi Arabia, particularly those involving arms and fossil fuels, due to its human rights record.
