Kogi Tribunal to Decide Ajaka, Ododo Governorship Election Dispute on Monday.

The Kogi Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja will announce its verdict on May 27 in the case filed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidate, Murtala Ajaka, against the election victory of Governor Usman Ododo. The tribunal, led by Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu, communicated this decision to the parties’ counsels. The dispute arose from Kogi’s off-cycle election on November 11, 2023, where Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged as the winner.

Ajaka contested the outcome and filed a petition, which commenced in December 2023 and reached its peak on May 13, with the adoption of final written addresses by the involved parties. The tribunal heard arguments from both sides, with INEC, Ododo, and APC urging the dismissal of the petition, citing its incompetence and lack of merit. Conversely, Ajaka’s counsel disagreed, maintaining the validity of their petition. The tribunal’s judgment is highly anticipated in this closely watched case.
