We did not abandon Ifeanyi Ubah. – Senate
Reports that the Senate abandoned late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the APC in Anambra South have been refuted. Senator Ubah, who served in the 9th and 10th Senates and represented the Anambra South Senatorial District, passed away on July 26, 2024. He served as the Senate Petroleum Downstream Committee’s chairman.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, APC, Ekiti South, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, said in a statement on Sunday that the recent rumors that the Senate did not participate in the funeral of its late colleague Ifeanyi Ubah were false. The statement said: “The Nigerian Senate has denied the recent rumors that it did not participate in the funeral of its late colleague Ifeanyi Ubah. Before his burial in Nnewi on Friday, the Senate gave Senator Ubah all the honors and rituals that come with being a serving member of the Senate, notwithstanding what some ignorant quarters have implied.
“For the first time in the National Assembly’s history, a whole legislative day was devoted to honoring our deceased colleague.”
The national flag was flown over his seat, a great honor and acknowledgement of his service to the Senate and the noble people he represented.
As soon as the news of the deceased senator’s passing became widely known, the Nigerian Senate did not desert him or his family. The Senate actually expressed its condolences for his passing to the people and administration of Anambra State.
It should be remembered that shortly after our late colleague’s death was made public, Senate President Godswill Akpabio led a high-ranking delegation of senators and key officers to the late senator’s home in Lagos to offer condolences to his wife and kids.
“A valedictory session was held in his honor, with nearly 100 senators out of the 109 members present. Vice President Kashim Shettima paid tribute to his achievements as a politician, businessman, and philanthropist.”The Senate claimed that by taking these steps, it was expressing its respect and gratitude for Senator Ubah’s contributions. On behalf of the Senate, which had previously contacted the family prior to his burial, significant Senate members were present in Nnewi.
The fact that they did all of that in his honor and that some media outlets perceived that as a sign of desertion indicates that the people who wrote the misinformed narrative were hoping that prominent senators would storm Nnewi in a brawl while lamenting their colleague’s premature death.
