BREAKING: Bauchi Govt Shuts All Schools for 5 Weeks

Bauchi State, under the governance of Governor Bala Mohammad, directed the closure of schools for 5 weeks in view of Ramadan fasting.

As per the direction, schools are directed to, from February 26, 2025, cease till the end of Ramadan and the Salah, classes to resume on April 5.

The official academic calendar indicates that the second term of the 2024/2025 session opened on January 5, 2025.

In splitting terms into two phases, the state government actually said: 5 January-28 February is for the first part of the term and five weeks from March 1 to April 5, after which classes will continue from April 6 to April 29.

Meanwhile, the order has not gone well with private school owners especially of the Christian faith; they were arguing that it is a heterogeneous population and hence no government order should deprive access to education for all students.

“This is not the very first time the school will be closed; we have gone through something similar before, and we set up a committee that liaised with the state education commissioner, who relaxed the order,” a source told Naijaeyes.

However, the state government was said to have taken a different stand this time by saying that all schools must close during the period of Ramadan fasting.

Discontented with the government’s act, especially that contentious calendar which shuts education for a period of five weeks for Nursery, Primary, and Secondary schools, a group christened “Christian-faith-based schools” in Bauchi has therefore opposed the directive and calls for intervention.

Naijaeyes  obtained a letter in which the group wrote to the Christian Association of Nigeria for such advocacy: signed by Musa Bogoro Zakka, the immediate past Chairman of Private School Owners in Bauchi State Local Government and the 2015 Bauchi State Chairman of the National Association of Private School Owners.

The letter reads: “We are writing on behalf of the Christian-faith-based schools in Bauchi State to bring into your kind attention the implication that the Bauchi State Ministry of Education Academic.

Calendar 2024/2025 session for nursery/primary and secondary schools requires all schools (private and public) to close outrightly during Ramadan Fast from 1st March 5th April 2025.”

“When we first observed, we were told CAN was one of the stakeholders who planned the calendar but we cannot be more Christians.”

“As days draw closer, however, feedback from the Christian faith-based schools makes it necessary to ask for an audience with you to raise our concerns for a way forward.”
