Mega-Party Proposed for 2027 Elections.
Will Opposition Unite? Mega-Party Proposed for 2027 Elections.
Renowned political economist Professor Pat Utomi has outlined plans to establish a mega political party aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. Utomi, who returned to Nigeria after an extended stay in the U.S., criticized existing political parties, asserting that they have failed to serve the nation’s interests. He emphasized the need for a new political order, driven by values such as integrity and respect for others, to address Nigeria’s challenges.
Utomi highlighted the importance of citizens and leaders embracing a mindset focused on collective well-being rather than narrow self-interests. He outlined his intention to convene meetings in Lagos and Abuja to advance discussions on the formation of the mega party, aiming to achieve significant progress before returning to the U.S.
The groups expected to form the mega platform include two categories of politicians: the ‘mea culpa’ cohort, comprising those who acknowledge past failures, and the ‘new value’ cohort, consisting of individuals committed to a fresh approach to governance.

Wabara urges Tinubu to intervene and stop Wike
Guinness Nigeria Faces Challenges Despite Revenue Growth
Guinness Nigeria’s recent financial results paint a mixed picture. While the company saw a significant increase in revenue (28% to N220.3 billion), it suffered a substantial loss (N61.7 billion) for the nine-month period ended March 31, 2024, compared to a profit in the same period of 2023.
Key Takeaways:
- Revenue Growth But Profit Loss: Revenue growth was driven primarily by price increases (average product prices rose 43% year-to-date).
- Currency Woes: Unrealised foreign exchange losses of N32.1 billion were a major contributor to the net finance cost spike.
- Debt Reduction: Despite a decrease in cash balance, net debt saw a slight reduction (2.8% year-to-date) due to a decrease in borrowings.
Looking Forward:
- Management’s View: CEO Adebayo Alli acknowledges the challenging economic environment but remains confident in the company’s ability to adapt.
- Focus on Innovation & Efficiency: Guinness Nigeria plans to prioritize innovation and operational excellence to cater to evolving consumer preferences.
- Digital Strategies: Increased focus on consumer engagement and trade support through digital platforms is expected to drive further growth.
Earlier Price Increase:
In May 2024, Guinness Nigeria implemented a price increase on all products due to rising production and business costs.
The Challenge:
Guinness Nigeria needs to find ways to improve profitability while navigating a tough economic climate. Increased revenue due to price hikes isn’t enough to offset rising costs and currency fluctuations. The company’s focus on innovation and efficiency, along with its digital strategies, might offer a path forward.

Rivers State in Political Gridlock: Funding Standoff and Impeachment Threats
Rivers State in Political Gridlock: Funding Standoff and Impeachment Threats
Nigeria’s Rivers State is facing a tense political climate. Here’s a breakdown of the key issues:
Local Government Funding Dispute:
- The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Rivers accuses Governor Siminalayi Fubara of withholding funds meant for the 23 local government areas (LGAs) since April 2024 (March 2024 for Emuoha LGA).
- ALGON argues this impedes their ability to fulfill their duties as the third tier of government.
Impeachment Threat:
- The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is pushing for Governor Fubara’s impeachment.
- Local government chairmen have joined the calls, citing the funding freeze as a key reason.
Governor Fubara’s Response:
- Governor Fubara has issued a directive barring all local government officials from appearing before the Rivers State House of Assembly.
- He claims the House lacks legal authority due to defections by a significant number of lawmakers.
Underlying Tensions:
- This conflict is seen as part of a larger political battle between Governor Fubara, the APC, and former Governor Nyesom Wike (now Minister of FCT).
Uncertainties:
- The legality of the Governor’s directive and the validity of the impeachment proceedings remain unclear.
- The situation has the potential to disrupt governance at the local level.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.

Google Unveils AlphaFold 3: A Game Changer for Molecular Modeling
Get ready for a revolution in biomolecular research! Google DeepMind’s latest AI marvel, AlphaFold 3, goes far beyond its predecessor. While AlphaFold excelled at predicting protein structures, AlphaFold 3 sets a new standard: it can predict the 3D structures of all life’s molecules.
This breakthrough has major implications for various fields:
- Medicine: Researchers can now model potential drug interactions with unprecedented accuracy, accelerating drug development.
- Agriculture: Scientists can design new crops and materials with optimized properties.
- Materials Science: Creating new materials with tailored properties becomes a more precise process.
What’s New?
- Beyond Proteins: AlphaFold 3 tackles not just proteins but also DNA, RNA, and smaller molecules (ligands). This significantly broadens its scientific applications.
- Enhanced Accuracy: The model boasts a 50% improvement in prediction accuracy compared to its predecessors.
How it Works:
AlphaFold 3 utilizes a vast library of existing molecular structures. Researchers simply input a list of molecules they want to combine. The model then employs a “diffusion method” – similar to AI image generators – to generate a 3D model of the new structure.
Real-World Applications:
DeepMind, alongside its drug discovery company Isomorphic Labs (co-founded by Hassabis), is already leveraging AlphaFold 3. The model has helped Isomorphic Labs gain a deeper understanding of new disease targets, thus accelerating potential breakthroughs.
Accessibility Matters:
To democratize access to this powerful tool, DeepMind is also launching AlphaFold Server. This platform, powered by AlphaFold 3, allows researchers to generate biomolecular structure predictions regardless of their computational resources. While academic and non-commercial use is encouraged, Isomorphic Labs is working with pharmaceutical partners to explore AlphaFold’s potential in drug discovery programs.
Responsible Development:
Google acknowledges the potential biosecurity risks associated with this technology. As noted in a recent paper, some experts worry that AI models “may enable threat actors” to design harmful pathogens. To mitigate these risks, Google has collaborated with biosecurity and research experts throughout the development process.
The Future of Biology is Here:
With AlphaFold 3, Google DeepMind has unlocked a treasure trove of possibilities in biomolecular research. This powerful tool paves the way for groundbreaking discoveries across medicine, agriculture, and materials science, while Google works to ensure its responsible development and deployment.

Marvel and ILM Immersive Bring Interactive Storytelling to Vision Pro with “What If…?”
Good news for Vision Pro owners! Marvel Studios and ILM Immersive are teaming up to create a groundbreaking mixed-reality video experience called “What If…? An Immersive Story.” This exclusive Disney+ title promises to be a major step forward for the VR headset.
Why It Matters:
- A First for Disney+: This is the first-ever interactive original content from Disney+.
- A Break from the Short Stuff: This hour-long experience is significantly longer than the typical offerings in Vision Pro’s current library.
- Beyond Passive Viewing: Users will actively participate in the story, “visiting strange worlds” and interacting with the environment using their eyes and hands.
The Promise of Action:
The experience centers around learning magic and wielding the power of the Infinity Stones – an exciting prospect for Marvel fans.
A Cautious Hope:
While the initial novelty of immersive video fades quickly (watching CG dinosaurs gets repetitive!), there’s a concern that “What If…?” might lack real depth. The announcement doesn’t mention any actors, raising questions about the story’s substance. Could this be more a gimmick than a genuine experience?
Looking Ahead:
Despite potential limitations, the “What If…?” series has been entertaining, so this VR adaptation could prove engaging. At the very least, it’s a welcome addition to the content-starved Vision Pro library. While the release date remains under wraps (“coming soon”), this collaboration is promising for interactive VR storytelling.

Seamfix Raises $4.5 Million for African Expansion
Nigerian identity solutions company Seamfix, a veteran player in the field for 17 years, has secured its first institutional investment of $4.5 million from Alitheia IDF. This funding fuels Seamfix’s ambitious plan to expand beyond Nigeria and tap into more stable African markets.
Dollarizing Growth: The Driving Force
CEO, Chimezie Emewulu, explains the strategic reasoning behind the expansion. While the company sees year-on-year growth in naira terms, currency fluctuations negatively impact dollar-denominated revenue. Expanding to Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa allows Seamfix to diversify its income stream and earn more in foreign currency.
Beyond Borders: Addressing Africa’s Identity Challenge
The company tackles a critical issue in Africa: the lack of digital identities. With an estimated 542 million people lacking ID cards, solving this problem could boost GDP growth by 7% across the continent. Seamfix offers digital identity creation, verification, and transaction accreditation solutions for large organizations and governments. Existing partnerships with the MTN group and a presence in Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ethiopia demonstrate their reach.
Proven Track Record and Diverse Revenue Streams
Seamfix boasts an impressive track record. They’ve provided identity solutions for key players like Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), major Telcos (MTN, Glo, Airtel), and financial institutions like UBA, Interswitch, and Union Bank. Their revenue streams include selling identity solutions, charging for verification services, yearly licenses for database access, and API calls. They’ve processed over 500 million identities to date.
From Custom Solutions to Identity Experts
Founded by classmates Chimezie Emewulu and Chibuzor Onwurah, Seamfix initially focused on customized workflow digitization for organizations. A pivotal client project in 2015, involving student identity verification for online exams, highlighted the critical need for robust identity management solutions across Africa. This led them to pivot towards their current focus.
A Success Story: Reducing MTN’s Fine and Market Breakthrough
Seamfix played a crucial role in helping MTN Nigeria significantly reduce a hefty fine imposed by regulators. By bringing MTN’s customer registration process up to compliance standards, helped them reduce a $5.2 billion fine to $1.7 billion. This success story solidified Seamfix’s position in the market.
