Deyemi Okanlawon’s romantic comedy “All Fair in Love” has emerged as a major success in Nigerian cinema, surpassing N90 million in ticket sales nationwide. This achievement, announced by Filmone Entertainment, cements the film’s position as Nollywood’s highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far.

Strong Start and Continued Success:

Following its premiere on February 14th, the film secured a strong opening weekend with N7.6 million in earnings. Advance screenings held just two days before release generated an additional N10.4 million, highlighting the pre-release buzz surrounding the movie.

A Celebration of Nollywood:

The robust box office performance of “All Fair in Love” reflects audience enthusiasm for compelling Nollywood narratives. This success story strengthens Nollywood’s position as a global filmmaking powerhouse and sets a promising tone for the Nigerian film industry in 2024.

A Story of Love and Complications:

“All Fair in Love” explores the complexities of relationships. The plot centers on two Nigerian business partners and friends, played by Deyemi Okanlawon and Timini Egbuson, whose camaraderie is tested when they find themselves attracted to the same woman, played by Buhle Samuels. The film boasts a stellar supporting cast featuring established names like Ireti Doyle, Juliet Ibrahim, and Adedimeji Lateef.

Egbuson previously appeared in the commercially successful “A Tribe Called Judah,” a movie associated with actress Funke Akindele that surpassed N1 billion in earnings.

“All Fair in Love” continues to dominate Nigerian cinemas, solidifying its place as a crowd-pleaser and a significant achievement for Nollywood in 2024.

Spotify Enters Video Streaming Arena, Beta Launches in Select Markets

0

Music streaming giant Spotify is making a move into video streaming, directly challenging the dominance of YouTube. This new feature, currently in beta testing, is rolling out to Premium users in eleven countries:

  • UK
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Sweden
  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • Philippines
  • Indonesia
  • Kenya

Limited Content for Now:

The initial rollout offers a limited selection of music videos, featuring both global artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, and Ice Spice, alongside regional favorites. Spotify acknowledges the competition they face from established platforms like Apple Music (with integrated music videos) and the free video giant, YouTube.

Why Video?

Spotify’s Vice President of Music Products, Charlie Hellman, explains the strategic move: “Music videos often play a crucial role in connecting listeners with artists and turning them into fans. This new feature allows music and music videos to coexist within the Spotify platform already used by over half a billion people.”

Engaging with Artists and Fans:

Spotify highlights existing features like Canvas visuals, Clips, Artist Bios, Live Events, and Merch as ways for artists to connect with audiences within the platform. Canvas visuals, in particular, have shown effectiveness in user engagement.

How to Watch Music Videos on Spotify (Beta):

  • Premium users in the selected countries can access the video feature by switching to “Switch to Video” on supported music tracks on their iOS, Android, desktop, or TV devices.
  • The music video will then play within the Now Playing view.
  • To return to audio-only listening, users can simply select “Switch to Audio.”
  • Videos can also be viewed in full screen by turning mobile devices to landscape mode.

Spotify’s Expanding Ecosystem:

Last year, Spotify introduced “Clips,” short-form vertical video content uploaded directly by artists. The platform has also broadened its offerings to include podcasts and audiobooks, aiming to attract a wider user base. This video streaming beta launch signals Spotify’s ambition to become a more comprehensive audio-visual entertainment hub.

N3.25 trillion security budget

0

The Reps have requested justification for the N3.25 trillion security budget from the NSA.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives urged the Office of the National Security Adviser to coordinate intelligence and security operations across the nation, particularly in Kaduna State, following the recent abduction of over 200 students by suspected bandits in the Chikun Local Government Area.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the discrepancy between the approved N3.25 trillion security and defence spending by the National Assembly and the ongoing security challenges in the country.

They also called for measures to control small and light weapons amidst escalating insecurity in certain regions.

The House’s decision came after adopting a motion titled “Urgent need to tackle the abhorrent abduction of over 200 students in Kuriga community of Chikun and secure lives and property in Kaduna State,” brought forth by Ahmed Munir, the representative of Lere Federal Constituency, Kaduna State.

Munir highlighted recent incidents of violence in Kaduna State, including the abduction of students and an attack on worshippers in a mosque, emphasizing the need for proactive security measures.

As part of their resolution, the House tasked the Office of the National Security Adviser with coordinating security and intelligence networks to develop a proactive master plan for restoring security. This plan includes conducting ground and aerial operations in various forests across the country.

Additionally, lawmakers urged the Office of the NSA to review and optimize the Acts governing the National Counter-Terrorism Centre and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons to better serve their intended purposes.

Overall, the House emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address the security challenges facing the nation.

Government postponed Student Loan.

The Nigerian government has indefinitely postponed the launch of the student loan scheme.

The launch of the Nigerian Students Loan Scheme by the Nigerian government has been postponed indefinitely. Akintunde Sawyer, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), revealed this during an interview with Arise News on Tuesday.

In June 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a bill to establish the Students Loan Fund, which aimed to provide interest-free loans to Nigerians pursuing higher education. Initially planned to commence between September and October 2023, the launch was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. President Tinubu then announced that it would start in January 2024.

In January, Minister of State for Education Yusuf Sununu announced the completion of preparations for the Student Loan Scheme program, including the development of its website and plans for commencement. President Tinubu assured leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students of the program’s imminent start, with intentions to include additional features such as vocational studies.

However, just 48 hours before the scheduled launch, Sawyer disclosed that the program’s launch was postponed due to the need for adjustments. He did not provide a new date for the launch.

Sawyer stated on Tuesday that the launch had been delayed to make necessary corrections around the launch itself. He expressed the government’s commitment to rolling out the program comprehensively and sustainably, aligning all stakeholders before announcing a new launch date.

“While I can’t commit to a specific date, I assure you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to this project and desires a swift rollout. We’re working diligently to make that happen,” Sawyer said.

Akpabio in Aso Rock comes shortly

0

Tinubu’s encounter with Akpabio in Aso Rock comes shortly after Ningi’s suspension.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently in a meeting with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and other lawmakers at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

The meeting follows the Senate’s decision to suspend Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, for three months. Ningi represents Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

While the agenda of the meeting hasn’t been disclosed, it’s believed to be related to Ningi’s suspension. This action stemmed from comments attributed to Ningi, suggesting that President Tinubu was implementing a budget different from what was presented to the National Assembly. Ningi claimed that the Federal Government, under Tinubu’s leadership, was executing a budget significantly larger than the one passed by the NASS.

According to the lawmakers, the budget debated and passed was worth N25 trillion

According to the lawmakers, the budget debated and passed was worth N25 trillion, not the N28.7 trillion currently being implemented. Ningi reiterated his stance on Monday, asserting that N3.7 trillion couldn’t be accounted for in the 2024 budget.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, the Senate suspended Ningi for three months due to his statements.

Following the meeting with the President, the President of the Senate didn’t speak to journalists.

You never served me anything Shaibu.

Shaibu informs the EDHA that he was never served with an impeachment notice.

Yesterday, Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Philip Shaibu, refuted claims made by Speaker Hon. Blessing Agbebaku during Monday’s plenary session regarding the service of an impeachment notice from the state House of Assembly. The Speaker stated that the House was unable to physically serve Shaibu, leading to a substituted service through a newspaper advertorial.

In a letter dated March 12, 2024, addressed to the Speaker and titled “RE: Service of Impeachment Notice,” signed by the Personal Assistant to the Deputy Governor, Charles Olubayo, Shaibu denied ever receiving any notice or refusing to accept it. He clarified that he had been out of the state since March 3 and could not have been served as claimed during the plenary session.

The letter emphasized, “No impeachment notice was ever served on the Deputy Governor, let alone refused acknowledgment.” It highlighted Shaibu’s absence from Benin since March 3, 2024, making it impossible for him to have been served by the Clerk of the House, as alleged during the plenary.

The letter further expressed confusion regarding the House’s decision to publish the impeachment notice in newspapers due to the claimed refusal of acknowledgment. It requested the Speaker to correct the public’s impression created during the plenary session to avoid misrepresentation in this crucial matter.

Breaking news: Bandits launch a new assault in Kaduna, resulting in the abduction of 61 individuals

On Monday, in Buda community, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, no fewer than 61 individuals were kidnapped in a fresh attack by bandits. Reports indicate that the assailants, numbering in large groups, stormed the community on Monday night, firing shots indiscriminately before seizing their victims.

According to resident Dauda Kajuru, the incident was horrifying. He stated that the bandits aimed to abduct a large number of people, potentially surpassing the count of school pupils in Kuriga Village of Chikun Local Government Area. However, the swift response of soldiers, who were stationed just 2 kilometers away from Kajuru, limited the casualties.

I can confide in you that during Commander Tega’s tenure, their activities ceased, and one could venture out without fear of abduction because he understood their terrain and tactics.

“It’s regrettable that Commander Tega was relocated from Kajuru Local Government at a time when peace was returning to our villages,” he lamented.

Another resident, Lawal Abdullahi, who managed to escape the abduction but whose wife was among the victims, also verified that 61 people were taken.

He disclosed that men, women, and children, including a nursing mother of two weeks, were among those abducted.

“The situation deeply distresses me as we’ve had no communication from them since the incident on Monday.

“We urge the government to act swiftly and ensure the safe return of our loved ones,” he pleaded.

Just days ago, bandits struck the Kuriga community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, seizing over 200 students and some teachers from LEA Primary School Kuriga during their morning assembly.

According to a local source who preferred to remain anonymous, the incident occurred around 8:30 am as the students were wrapping up the morning assembly. Bandits from various parts of the village converged on the school premises.

“The bandits abducted over 200 students, including both primary and secondary school students who had been relocated to the primary school from an area outside the community due to the fear of bandit attacks.”

Energy crisis: The federal government instructs NERC to revoke

The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to revoke licenses of underperforming electricity distribution companies (DISCOs). This directive comes amidst a 21% year-on-year drop in power generation, down to 3,475MW in March 2024 from 4,404MW in the same period in 2023, largely attributed to low investment and inadequate gas supply.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the importance of addressing distribution challenges, considering it the weakest link in the electricity supply chain. He urged NERC to explore innovative approaches to compel DISCOs to improve service, including imposing stiff penalties for non-compliance and considering license cancellation.

Adelabu highlighted plans for restructuring DISCOs into smaller entities

Adelabu highlighted plans for restructuring DISCOs into smaller entities, with each company serving a single state. He stressed the need for improved performance, indicating that failure to pick up allocated power or provide consistent supply could lead to license revocation.

Furthermore, Adelabu outlined government efforts to boost power generation to 6,000MW within six months by clearing debts owed to power generation companies and gas suppliers. While subsidies will continue temporarily, the government aims to transition the sector to commercially driven tariffs over the next three years.

Regarding recent incidents, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, clarified that a fire at the Kano substation occurred during efforts to repair a transformer leak.

Scottish Star Lewis Ferguson Attracts Interest from Serie A Giants

0

Scottish midfielder Lewis Ferguson has become a hot property in Serie A, with Juventus and Napoli reportedly interested in securing his signature this summer.

The 24-year-old has impressed since his £3 million move from Aberdeen to Bologna in 2022. His strong performances have already earned him a contract extension and the captain’s armband for the Rossoblu.

A Bargain Move for Bologna:

Ferguson’s transfer has proven to be a shrewd investment for Bologna. He’s become a key player, contributing six goals in 27 league appearances. This strong play has propelled the team to fourth place in Serie A, putting them in contention for a Champions League spot.

Eyes on Ferguson:

While Juventus and Napoli are the most prominent names circling, reports suggest interest from other European clubs as well. However, no concrete offers have materialized yet, and the transfer window remains in its early stages.

Aberdeen to Benefit from Sell-On Clause:

The deal that sent Ferguson to Italy included a 15% sell-on clause for his former club, Aberdeen. This means the Scottish side stands to gain a significant financial reward if he is transferred.

International Recognition Likely:

Ferguson’s impressive form is likely to see him included in the upcoming Scotland squad announced by Steve Clarke. The team will face the Netherlands and Northern Ireland in international friendlies.

Ferguson’s stock is on the rise, and a major transfer move could be on the horizon in the coming summer transfer window.

Upset in Indian Wells: Djokovic Falls to Qualifier Nardi

0

World number one Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning defeat in the third round of the Indian Wells tournament. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was ousted by 20-year-old Italian Luca Nardi, a lucky loser ranked a staggering 123rd in the world.

Nardi, who initially lost in qualifying, entered the main draw due to another player’s withdrawal. He played with surprising confidence, firing 34 winners to defeat Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The young Italian’s victory was sealed with a final ace, leaving him overwhelmed with emotion.

Djokovic, still seeking his first title of 2024, expressed frustration during the match with an umpire’s call. He argued for a hindrance penalty when Nardi paused mid-point, believing the ball would go out. However, the umpire ruled that Nardi’s action wasn’t a hindrance, as he didn’t verbally indicate the point was over.

This loss marks a historic moment, with Nardi becoming the lowest-ranked player ever to defeat Djokovic at a major tournament. Djokovic acknowledged his struggles this season: “No titles this year. That’s not something I’m used to.”

Despite the setback, Djokovic remains focused. “It’s part of the sport,” he stated. “Hopefully I’ll win some more and still keep going.” He aims to break his recent slump and return to peak form.

US general, senior officials hold talks

A US general and senior officials engage in discussions with the Niger junta.

A delegation, including a United States general and senior officials, visited Niger on Tuesday to meet with the ruling junta, marking a renewed contact following the ousting of the elected leader, expulsion of French forces, and a shift towards closer ties with Russia.

General Michael Langley, the commander of US Africa Command, is part of the delegation, which is expected to stay in Niger until Wednesday, as announced by the State Department. The purpose of the visit, according to a brief statement from the State Department, is to hold discussions with the junta regarding “Niger’s return to a democratic path and the future of our security and development partnership.”

Despite the coup and subsequent restrictions on assistance to the government, the United States maintains approximately 1,000 troops in Niger at a desert drone base constructed at a cost of $100 million.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Niger a year ago to bolster support for Mohamed Bazoum

Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Niger a year ago to bolster support for Mohamed Bazoum, the elected president and a key ally in Western security efforts against jihadists. However, just four months later, Bazoum was deposed by the military and placed under house arrest. The junta adopted a tough stance against former colonial power France, resulting in the withdrawal of French troops stationed in Niger for nearly a decade.

While Niger’s military, which has collaborated closely with the United States, has not demanded the withdrawal of US forces, the junta has expressed interest in cooperating with Russia. However, it has not gone as far as the military-led neighboring countries of Mali and Burkina Faso in fully embracing Moscow.

Accompanying the delegation in Niger are Molly Phee, the top State Department official for Africa, and Celeste Wallander, the assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs.
